Roma Are Starting to Show Gasperini’s Signature

Roma are off to a perfect start under Gasperini, but his influence already extends beyond results. From the missed transfer targets to the pressing, rotations and tactical setup, the ex-Atalanta coach is shaping the team — with plenty more still to come.

Since the preseason camp in England back in early August, Gasperini was clear: the attack defines a team’s strength. “How competitive we’ll be depends on what we manage to do up front.” But little was done. According to La Repubblica, sporting director Massara even threatened to resign after failing to meet Gasperini’s demands in attack. Dovbyk stayed, while Ferguson arrived, and Bailey (injured) joined.

Roma, however, sit on six points after two Rounds. Their Irish striker has become a useful reference point, linking play well but still far from the deadly striker Gasperini’s football thrives on. The real issue lies with the attacking midfielders: Soulé is the only certainty; Dybala “can play anywhere” but often outside his comfort zone; El Shaarawy hasn’t met expectations as a starter. Compared to Atalanta’s averages last season, Roma’s attacking production isn’t drastically lower: 12 shots p90 (vs 14.3 at Atalanta), with 4.5 on target (vs 5.1). Reaching 2.1 goals per game, however, won’t be easy.

The mentality and tactical setup are already taking shape. Tactical reports show a high defensive line and aggressive pressing: Roma rank third in PPDA (8.5) behind Como and Juventus, and second in high recoveries (23). With the ball, the approach is also clear: 5th in possession (59.9%) and 2nd in final-third passes, proving their ability to settle near the opponent’s box through quick transitions. Classic Gasperini movements are visible too: Cristante dropping deep, Koné pulling wide, opening space for centre-backs to attack (especially Hermoso). This rotation stretches defenses and enables a sort of gegenpressing, exemplified by Wesley’s goal against Bologna.

Gasperini credits Ranieri’s work, but his influence is already obvious. Positive results are helping to calm a delicate environment that, nonetheless, holds him in high regard. Peace with Massara must be found, as the squad won’t change until January. The sporting director, in charge since June 19, did at least avert UEFA sanctions. And perhaps Gasperini will find a way to unlock two question marks: Baldanzi and Pellegrini.
